Core Temp on Windows 11

Windows 11 still gives you no built-in way to see how hot the processor is running, so the approach is the same as on earlier releases: read the sensor inside the chip directly. Core Temp supports Windows 11, and the notes below cover the parts of the experience that are specific to it.

Getting it running

  1. Grab the installer from the download page and verify the checksum.
  2. Run it and accept the User Account Control prompt — the sensor is read through a kernel driver, which is why elevation is required.
  3. Start the program. The processor is identified automatically; nothing needs to be selected by hand.

If you would rather leave the system untouched, the portable archive runs from any folder and still needs the same one-off driver approval.

Readings in the Windows 11 taskbar

The notification area works the same as before, with one Windows 11 detail worth knowing: icons are hidden behind the overflow arrow by default. Pin Core Temp to the visible part of the taskbar through Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → System tray icons, otherwise the live readings sit out of sight. Inside Core Temp itself you choose which sensors appear and what colours they use.

Hybrid processors: P-cores and E-cores

Recent Intel desktop and mobile chips mix performance cores with efficient ones, and the two types behave very differently under the same workload. Because Core Temp lists every core separately, that split is visible directly: the performance cores take the heavy threads and run hotter, while the efficient cores handle background work at lower temperatures. A gap between the two groups is expected, not a fault.

Starting with the system

Turn on the start-with-Windows option if you want temperatures available from the moment you sign in. If the program does not appear after a restart, check that it has not been disabled in the Startup apps list in Windows Settings, which is where Windows 11 quietly parks entries it considers optional.

Things that trip people up

  • No readings after a sleep or restart. Update to the current release first — this was addressed in the latest builds.
  • Memory integrity and virtualisation-based security. These features tighten what drivers are allowed to do; keeping the program up to date is the practical answer.
  • A warning from a security suite during setup. Driver-based tools attract heuristic flags. Verify the published checksum before you install.
